Dutwa plains
Dutwa plains is one of the places that tourists can see and witness the great wildebeests migration in Tanzania. The herds move through Dutwa plains from April to May every year. They concentrate on the plains to feed on the newly grown nutritious grass. Growing from the long rainy season and also drink from the Mbalageti River that is adjacent to the plains.
Wildlife watching
Although tourists visiting Dutwa plains are mainly interested in the great wildebeest migration herds. The plains are also home to several other animals such as; wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, topis, elands, warthogs, elephants. Lions, cheetahs, giraffes, buffaloes, black rhinos, leopards, African wild dog, hyenas, hippos, reed-bucks and so much more. Dutwa plains can be visited all year round. But the best months for wildlife watching in the area is from April to May when migration herds are present. Wildlife watching at Dutwa plains can also be done on a hot air balloon for a superb experience.
Bird watching
Serengeti national park is a birders paradise boasting with over 500 species of birds recorded, the Dutwa plains are home to some of these birds namely; fischers lovebird, black headed gonolek, grey crested helmet shrike, kori bustard, secretary bird, rufous tailed weaver, red capped robin chat, ostrich, verreauxs eagle, yellow throated sangrouse, usambiro barbet, silverbird, southern ground hornbill, grey breasted spur fowl, schalows turaco, african fish eagle and european schalow to mention a few. The best time for birding is from November to April when most birds are breeding and migratory birds from Europe and North Africa are present in the park.
