Discover the Talek River: A Hidden Gem in Masai Mara

The Masai Mara game reserve is one of the most visited conservation areas in Kenya. Covering an area of 1,510 kilometers squared. The reserve is located in the southeastern part of Kenya renowned for its abundant wildlife especially the great wildebeest migration.

Talek River

The Talek river is one of the unknown but important rivers in Masai Mara game reserve in Kenya. The reserve is drained by 5 rivers. That is the Talek river, Mara river, Engare river, Sand river and Engito river. Talek river originates in Loita hills. Flowing to a westly direction from Kinyei area found at the far northeastern part of Masai mara game reserve.

The Talek river flows for about 240 kilometers from the Mau escarpment to the Mara plains. Its an important water source to most wildlife species at the Masai Mara game reserve. Most animals can be seen close to the river banks of the river in Masai Mara.

The river is a tributary of the Mara river bisecting the Masai mara game reserve from East to West flowing into the Mara river from the north to south. The great Mara river and Talek river divide the Masai Mara game reserve into three sections teemed with wildlife.

Sekenani sector and Musiara sector
The Sekenani sector is found at the southeastern part of Talek and mara rivers while Musiara sector of masai mara lies in between the Talek river and the Mara river. Both of these sectors are good areas for wildlife watching and birding.

The Mara river

The Mara river in which the reserve derives its name from is the most known at the Masai Mara Game Reserve.

This river is famous for its dramatic river crossings during the great wildebeests migration when over 1.5 million animals cross from Serengeti national park in Tanzania to Masai Mara game reserve in search of better pastures and water.

Large herds of thousands of wildebeests can be seen crossing the river for several hours from July to early September.

Mara river is also an obstacle to the migration herds because its infested with thousands of crocodiles waiting to feast on a meal as the crossing takes place, its estimated that about 250000 wildebeests die during the migration and the highest deaths happen at the Mara River due to predation by crocodiles, drowning and stampede

The Mara river flows for 395 kilometers through Kenya and Tanzania draining into lake Victoria.
