Serengeti national park is situated in the northern part of Tanzania. The parks name was derived from a local Masai word siringet. Translated to mean open endless plains due to the nature of its landscape. The park covers an area of 14,763 home to the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth. The park is divided into many sectors. Tourists visiting should know when to visit a particular sector and where to book accommodation.
Serengeti national park can be visited all year round. But the main highlight is the great wildebeest migration that takes place annually. This involves 1.5 million wildebeests, 400000 zebras, 200000 gazelles and other antelopes. Migrating to Masai Mara game reserve in search of better pastures and and water.
Ndoha plains
Ndoha plains are situated at the western corridor of Serengeti national park in Tanzania. During the great wildebeest migration every year, thousands of wildebeests, zebras and other antelopes concentrate at the Ndoha plains. In Serengeti national park from April to May to feed on the newly grown nutritious grass to strengthen their calves for the long 800 to 1000 kilometers journey to Masai Mara game reserve in Kenya.
Ndoha plains can be visited all year round but the best months are from April to May when wildebeests migration herds are present. Although the weather makes it difficult to visit during May to April, tourists will have the park to themselves without huge crowds like in the peak season and other parts of Serengeti.
Ndoha plains can be reached from Arusha town of Tanzania within 7 hours drive. There are also several airstrips at different sectors of the park that you can fly into from Arusha airport, Kilimanjaro airport, Nyerere airport and Lake Manyara airport among the rest. Tourists must book accommodation close to the airport they fly into to avoid driving for long hours.
