The great wildebeests migration had been praised as one of the most remarkable wildlife spectacles on earth. The reason as to why the animals move is unknown but scientists and researchers. Wildebeets belong to the antelope family, according to fossil founding, it’s believed that blue/common wildebeests evolved 2.5 million years ago. Each year over 1 million blue/common wildebeests start their journey from Ngorongoro conservation area of Tanzania through Serengeti national park to Masai Mara game reserve. The overall journey covers about 800 kilometers and almost 250,000 wildebeests and 80,000 zebras die along the way due to exhaustion, predation, thirst, hunger and other natural calamities.

Wildebeests Migration in September brings the end of the longest dry season. During this time, the animals are found in Lamai, central lobo. And Kogatende areas of Northern Serengeti and spread across Masai Mara plains. The river crossings during this time can be still be spectacular. From the great Mara river but most herds have already crossed to the Masai Mara side.
Staying at the right location in Masai Mara or Serengeti national park during the wildebeests migration can increase your chance of having a prolific wildlife experiment. The migration is always on the move. Therefore some lodges and hotels might not be at strategic locations incase you want to witness river crossings and migration in general.
Tourists visiting during this time can stay at the accommodations found in the northern part of Serengeti national park like Sayari. The Nomad Lamai Serengeti, Alex Walker Serian, Olakira, Kimondo, Chaka, Serengeti under covers and Serengeti safari camp to mention a few.
It’s advisable to visit during September when there are less tourists. Compared to July and August when both Masai Mara game reserve and Serengeti national park are crowded. In September you’re likely to see the big five within a day giving you a fulfilling experience. Predator spotting is also common during this month.
From June to November wildebeests are majorly concentrated in Masai Mara game reserve. And from December to May, they disperse across Serengeti national park and Ngorongoro conservation areas.
