Essential Ngorongoro Park Regulations for a Safe Visit

Ngorongoro crater also nicknamed ‘garden of eden’ is the largest inactive caldera in the world hosting 25000 animals including the African big five. Ngorongoro conservation area was established in 1959 covering an area of 8,292 kilometers squared.

The Ngorongoro crater covers 260 kilometers squared with a diverse range of habitats supporting various species of wildlife and birds.

The conservation area offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities all year round and its home to criticality endangered rhinos and high population of lions.

Ngorongoro park regulations

For better conservation and protection of Ngorongoro conservation area, there are Ngorongoro park regulations to be followed by all visitors entering at the conservation area given that it receives over 50000 visitors per year and some of this can be seen below.

The Ngorongoro conservation area is open daily from 0600hrs and closes at 1800hrs except for Seneto descent Gate that closes at 1600hrs daily.

Littering of the park is not allowed, all visitors must put their wastes or rubbish at designated areas.

Visitors are nit allowed to removed any archaeological deposits

While at the crater, you can only use Lemala (sopa) road for both ascending and descending. While Lerai road is for only ascending and Seneto road is for only descending.

All vehicles must maintain established game tracks, driving off road or off tracks isnt allowed.

The speed limit for all vehicles at the reserve is 25 km/h in Ngorongoro conservation area.

All visitors to Ngorongoro conservation area and Oldupai Gorge must be accompanied by a licensed guide.

During game drives and once an animal is spotted, the maximum number of animals allowed around an animal is 5.

Noise making, beating cars, shouting and other weird sounds are not allowed at the crater especially when viewing wildlife.

Feeding animals while at the crater is prohibited

While on a game drive and animals happen to be crossing. You must stop and allow the animals to cross at their own phase.

Camping and picnics must be done at only designated areas

Use of camera drones is not allowed at Ngorongoro conservation area
