Serengeti national park is one of the most visited conservation areas in Africa. Covering an area close to 15000 kilometers squared. Divided into various sectors, we can look at one of the park areas below.
The Moru Kopjes
Moru Kopjes are a section found at the southwestern part of central Serengeti national park. Covering an area of 3259 kilometers squared.
The name Moru is derived from a local Masai word translated to mean ‘old one’.

Black Rhino
There are about 2000 black rhinos at Serengeti national park. Concentrated at the famous Moru Kopjes renowned for the black rhino. This is the only part of Serengeti national park where you can spot black rhinos.
The Great Migration
The Moru Kopjes provide the great wildebeests migration an habitat. Around March and April every year when 1.5 million wildebeests, 400000 zebras, 200000 gazelles and other antelopes move to the neighboring Masai Mara game reserve in search of greener pastures and fresh water.
Maasai Rock Paintings
The young masai worriors are the one that made the rock paintings. The paintings are unique and painted using different materials from the area.
Gong Rock
The rock is one of the best spots for seeing various animals across the plains from the top of the rock. There is also a cave where the Masai pastoralists used to reside in before establishment of Serengeti national park.
Lake Magadi
Lake Magadi known as lake Makati is one of the most fascinating attractions close to the Moru Kopjes. It’s a beautiful shallow alkaline lake attracting thousands of lesser flamingos. The swamps close to lake Magadi attract a lot of water birds and hippos.

At the visitor center you can learn more about black rhinos and their conservation status of Serengeti.
Other areas of interest close to the Moru Kopjes. Include long grass plains, turners springs, Makoma hill, Retina hippo pool, Seronera river and Seronera valley.
